Two Hours, One Life is a multiplayer game where players cooperate to build towns and keep their families alive.  While it is possible to play mostly solo, all towns share the same map. To make the gaming experience enjoyable for all, it is valuable to stick to the etiquette and social norms that are generally agreed upon between the players.

Rules[]

When joining the Discord server to create an account, all players are prompted to agree to the rules. Both the Discord and game servers are moderated, and breaking the rules can lead to a warning or even a ban.

These are the rules that all players need to agree to when joining the server:

  1. Be a decent human being. No insults, threats, harassment, derogatory or degrading language.
  2. Do not intentionally be a general nuisance or cause havoc upon other players in the game.
  3. Do not spam. Keep channels clear and clean. No advertising of unrelated topics anywhere, including direct message spam.
  4. Do not fabricate drama. Unrelated toxicity is not welcome, keep it friendly.
  5. Be sensible, act mature, friendly and kind. KISS: Keep it simple stupid. It's not hard, be nice.
  6. Free speech does not exist here. We will always use our discretion. Attempting to bypass these rules based on technicalities will see your punishment extended.

Please keep in mind these rules apply to this Discord as well as when playing on any of our game servers. It's not hard, it's just simple manners. Thank you.

Etiquette[]

In addition to the explicit rules, there are some 2HOL-specific conventions that are important to know about in order to not cause nuisance to other players.

No killing other players[]

Killing other players is not allowed in the game. The only exception is if you have consent from the other player and make absolutely sure that no unwilling players get involved.

Coming across other towns[]

Never take things from other towns[]

It is not allowed to loot other towns. Even if they seem deserted, no town is considered abandoned. The founder (the Eve) can return at any time using the spawn code, and when they do, the town should be in the same state as they left it. For this reason it is customary to leave as little footprint as possible when you come across a neighbouring town when exploring the map. Some things that are generally considered acceptable is to grab a bite of food if you need it, or to take a little bit of kerosene for your plane, if you're travelling by plane.

Trees settlement

Someone cut down trees — there must be a settlement nearby.

Starting a new settlement[]

Don't settle too close to another town[]

If you’re starting a new settlement, check for signs of other towns close by. It is advisable to avoid settling closer than at least a few hundred tiles from another town, so as to avoid competition over natural resources and risk of family members disturbing the other town.

Go infertile when needed[]

If you don't yet have the means to take care of a baby, or if you want to play solo, make sure to go infertile by saying the phrase "no bb". You can go fertile again at any point by saying "yes bb". Abandoning babies and letting them starve is not acceptable. If you forget to go infertile and get an unwanted baby, tell them about the situation and make sure to go infertile afterwards.

Being a good family member[]

Check with the Eve before building[]

Before starting any larger building projects it is a good idea, when possible, to check with the founder (the Eve) of the town how they want it layed out.

Avoid losing items in the wilderness[]

If you set out exploring, there is always a risk that you won't make it back home. Make sure that you have a home marker before you leave. If you don't intend to come back, or if there is any risk of you getting lost or bit by a wild animal, make sure to bring as little materials as possible. Horses, backpacks and clothing items are often best to leave at home, so that they don't get lost to the family forever. However, if you set out from an advanced town, they might afford to lose some of the simpler clothes, such as rabbit fur clothing. Use your best judgement.

Be-considerate-of-others-work

Smithing is a time sensitive task where players need space.

Be considerate of others' work[]

Be attentive to what other players are doing, so that you can avoid standing in the way of their work and taking away tools that they are currently using.

Keep a sustainable livestock population[]

If the town has a domestic mouflon, a domestic bison and/or a domestic boar, their purpose is to produce baby animals, and they are not to be killed. Make sure never to kill all the animals of a single kind, so that the town can keep producing more livestock.

Chop-trees-mindfully

Swamp trees can not be replanted.

Chop trees mindfully[]

While logs and firewood are important resources, some trees have other uses and are not meant to be chopped. Before taking down trees, advise with your family members, or preferably the founder (the Eve) of the town. Here are some common examples:

  • Juniper trees provide tinder for fireplaces and are often planted in or near the kitchen and smithy.
  • Maple trees provide straight branches for building and crafting.
  • Some trees, such as banana, cocoa and coconut trees, cannot be replanted and are therefore gone forever if they are cut down.

At the end of your life[]

Put away your clothes[]

When you are about to die of old age or leave by using the /die command, it is good practice to put the clothes you are wearing back where they belong, so that your family don't need to clean them up from the floor.

Get out of the way[]

Make sure your bones don't end up in the middle of a busy place such as the kitchen or the smithy. If you want to be buried, you can go to the graveyard. If you want to be made into bonemeal to fertilize plants, it's a good idea to die close to the farm.

Don't spam /die as a baby[]

When you're born as a baby you can use the /die command if you don't want to stay with your family. For consideration of the mother, it's best to do this before she spends time getting you clothed. Avoid being born back into the same family and using /die several times in a row, as this disturbs the mother's gameplay and depletes her hunger bar. In stead, you can chose in the main menu to be born into a specific family by entering their last name. In the Two hours One Life Discord server, you can see what families are online in the #game-stats channel.

Be mindful about who you bury and where[]

Main article: Graveyard

Burying a family member can be a beautiful way of honoring them, but graves are blocking objects that can end up in the way of work spaces. In big towns, graveyards can take up a lot of space. Furthermore, the names on graves will be forgotten with each server restart. To make sure the grave has a lasting message, you need to make a written grave. So, before you bury a family member, consider the following:

  • Did you know this person enough to write a message about them? Were they a valuable member of the town?
  • Is there a graveyard? Does the founder (the Eve) want a graveyard in town?

How to report a griefer[]

Two Hours One Life is a moderated game. If you come across a player that is breaking the rules or in some way making the in-game experience unpleasant for others, you can go to the Two Hours, One Life Discord server and find the #tickets channel. Provide as much information as possible, and the moderators will have a look at what happened. If needed, they can give a warning or ban the reported player, and keep a record of repeated offenses.
